What Is Homeopathy?
A gentle, plant-based system of medicine that’s been healing millions for over 200 years — explained simply for beginners.
The art of like cures like
Homeopathy is a natural system of medicine that uses highly diluted substances — drawn from plants, minerals, and animals — to trigger the body’s own healing ability.
Unlike conventional medicine, which often targets symptoms directly, homeopathy works on the principle that the body knows how to heal itself. A homeopathic practitioner looks at the whole person — their physical symptoms, emotional state, personality, and lifestyle — before prescribing a remedy.
Founded over 200 years ago by German physician Samuel Hahnemann, homeopathy is now practiced in more than 80 countries and is one of the most widely used alternative medicine systems in the world — particularly in India, Germany, France, and the UK.
A 200-year journey
Samuel Hahnemann is born
Born in Meissen, Germany, Hahnemann would go on to become a physician, chemist, and the founder of homeopathy. He was deeply dissatisfied with the harsh medical practices of his time.
The birth of homeopathy
Hahnemann discovered the principle of “like cures like” while translating a medical text about quinine (cinchona bark). He found that cinchona — used to treat malaria — produced malaria-like symptoms in a healthy person. Homeopathy was born.
Organon of Medicine published
Hahnemann published his foundational text, the Organon of the Healing Art, which laid out all the principles, philosophy, and practice of homeopathy. It remains the definitive guide for homeopathic practitioners today.
Homeopathy spreads globally
Homeopathy spread across Europe and reached India (1839), the USA, and South America. In India, it quickly gained acceptance and is today recognized as one of the National Systems of Medicine.
500 million patients worldwide
The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes homeopathy as the second-largest therapeutic system in the world. In India alone, over 100 million people rely on homeopathy as their primary form of healthcare.
Three founding principles
Homeopathy is built on three fundamental laws that distinguish it from all other medical systems:
Like Cures Like
A substance that causes symptoms in a healthy person can cure similar symptoms in a sick person. Onion causes watery eyes — so it’s used to treat colds with watery discharge.
Minimum Dose
The more diluted a remedy, the more potent it becomes. Homeopathic remedies are diluted to nano-doses, making them gentle, safe, and free of toxic side effects.
Treat the Whole Person
Homeopathy doesn’t just treat disease — it treats the individual. Two people with the same illness may receive different remedies based on their unique physical and emotional constitution.
“The highest ideal of cure is rapid, gentle and permanent restoration of health.”— Samuel Hahnemann, Organon of Medicine, 1810
What are homeopathic remedies?
Homeopathic remedies are made from natural substances — plants, minerals, and animals — that undergo a process of serial dilution and succussion (vigorous shaking). The result is a tiny white sugar pill or liquid drop that carries the energetic imprint of the original substance.
Arnica Montana
For bruising, muscle soreness, trauma, and injury recovery.
Allium Cepa
Made from onion. Used for colds, hay fever, and watery eye discharge.
Apis Mellifica
From bee venom. Treats stings, swelling, and burning sensations.
Belladonna
From deadly nightshade. Useful for sudden high fever, throbbing headaches.
Nux Vomica
From poison nut tree. For digestive issues, acidity, and overindulgence.
Pulsatilla
From windflower plant. For hormonal issues, PCOD, and emotional sensitivity.
Each remedy comes in different potencies — 6C, 30C, 200C, 1M, and beyond. The higher the number, the more diluted and more potent the remedy. Your homeopath will select both the remedy and potency based on your individual case.
Conditions commonly treated
Homeopathy is effective for a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. It is particularly known for helping conditions where conventional medicine offers limited long-term relief:
Homeopathy is especially suitable for children and pregnant women due to its gentle, non-toxic nature. It can also be used alongside conventional medications without risk of interference.
Clearing up the confusion
Homeopathy is one of the most misunderstood systems of medicine. Here are some common myths — and what the truth actually is:
Homeopathy is just a placebo — it has no real effect.
Studies and centuries of clinical use show real, measurable results, including in infants and animals who cannot experience placebo effects.
Homeopathy is too slow and takes years to work.
Acute conditions like colds, fever, and injuries can respond within hours. Chronic conditions take longer — as they do with any system of medicine.
All homeopathic patients get the same sugar pills.
There are over 4,000 homeopathic remedies. Each patient receives a prescription tailored specifically to their unique symptoms and constitution.
Homeopathy can’t be used with other medicines.
Homeopathic remedies are non-toxic and do not interfere with conventional medications. Many patients use both systems together safely.
